Bridal showers and their invitations are relatively new in this country, the first ones being traced to 1890. They are traditionally a celebration for the bride given by her friends and family. Bridal showers really caught on in the 1930’s and were meant to be informal gatherings of women where shower invitations were sent out, small gifts were given, light refreshments served and guests talked about being wives and mothers. It was a chance for the bride to be with her close friends, family and new family before she became a married woman. Games were played, and love and wisdom was shared.
 
Bridal showers today usually have a theme that the gifts and the shower invitations reflect. So for a kitchen shower, guests might bring a favorite recipe and a kitchen utensil. One interesting shower we heard about was a potluck where every guest brought their favorite dish and the gift was the recipe and one implement used to make the dish. The shower coordinators made sure there was enough variety in the dishes and gifts. This is a wonderful way for a young bride to have her kitchen set up.
